This week revolved around the forum and video. We practiced what we were going to say a lot... and rushed to get everything made and printed. We barely finished our poster on time! But thankfully it all worked out. We appreciated all the feedback we received from teachers, parents, and students, and loved answering all of the thoughtful questions. Once the forum was over, we started working on our video. We wanted the video to be engaging and informative, like our pamphlet, and we are almost finished. Once we finish, by Tuesday, the video will be available to watch on our home page!
This week our group decided to take a different direction. We realized that this time of year, school's are incredibly packed and don't have time to take out of class for a childhood Leukemia presentation. Which we understood completely. We decided to reach out to hospitals in LA and ask them if we could put our pamphlet on any front desk or bulletin board they have. Jonathan Jacques Cancer Center in Long Beach said yes! We are incredibly happy about that and plan to drop off the pamphlets this upcoming Tuesday. (May 10th) We were nervous about switching ideas again because of our time frame. We have also been doing a mini presentation for our siblings about our project and then having them take a pre and post survey about what they learned. This is to gather data about what other kids know already know about Leukemia and how they would act around a returning student. In the up coming week... our main goal is to go to a bunch of hospitals, and finish our poster.
One main roadblock we hit, was the extensive checks one has to go through to put a pamphlet at the front desk of a hospital. This process involves lawyers and other professionals to make sure everything is up to code. We gave CHLA, Jonathan Jacques Cancer Center, and Miller's Children's hospital our pamphlets, but we honestly don't know if they will ever get through the process... We hope it will, the social workers we talked to were impressed with our pamphlets so we will keep emailing who we spoke with to see what happens next!
