For the 2016 CBL project, all five of us showed a common interest in Cancer. As well as a shared interest in this disease, we also had a variety of different work styles and skill sets that complimented each other. Over a few days we narrowed our topic down from the broad topic of Cancer, to childhood Cancer, specifically Pediatric Leukemia. We felt that childhood Cancer hadn’t been receiving enough awareness and support compared to adult cancer. Therefore, with this in mind we wanted to educate more people about the physical and emotional struggles experienced by these children.
Problems We Are Beginning to Notice
One part of childhood Cancer that we have noticed does not get enough awareness is the emotional toll that the children and family members have to deal with during and after treatment. After/during the course of this treatment, it is common to experience depression, post traumatic stress disorder, and anxiety. We want to be able to support and help the patients, as well as family and friends, learn to cope with the emotional distress.
